How to Clean Roman Blinds

Roman blinds are window shades that do not have slats or openings. The blinds often appear to be a single piece of fabric, and they can be very easily lowered or raised with the use of a drawstring on one end. They are popular due to their appearance and more importantly their versatility. They can be made from a vast range of fabrics in numerous colours, and they are relatively easy to clean. Cleaning some types of blind can be a pain, but if you follow these simple instructions you should be able to maintain your Roman blinds so they are free of dust and retain their elegance.

1. Lower the Blinds

The first step when cleaning blinds is to lower them as far down as they can go. Roman blinds are designed to bunch up when they all fully raised, so you will need to lower the blinds so there is no fabric bunching up at the bottom.

2. Use Canned Air to Remove Excess Dust

Once the blinds are all the way down, it is a good idea to use canned air to get rid of any excess dust. You can buy canned air from department shops and some convenience stores. Its main use is actually to remove dust from electronics as well as other delicate items safely, but it is also great for this purpose. Start at the very top of the blinds and then work your way down to the bottom. This will hopefully remove any dust that could stick to a feather duster.

3. Lightly Dust the Blinds with a Feather Duster

Once you have cleared the bulk of the dust, use a feather duster for a more delicate but thorough cleaning. Gently clean each panel of the blinds from one side to the other. It’s best to start from the top and work your way down the same as with the canned air. This will help remove any caked on dust that the canned air was not able to remove and loosen whatever dust gets left behind for the next stage of the cleaning process.

4. Wipe the Blinds with a Damp Cloth

Wipe down each panel from side to side the same as you did with the feather duster but this time using damp cloth. This should remove the remaining dust and dirt that has may have built up on the blinds. Make sure to rinse the cloth every couple of panels to make sure you don’t keep spreading the dust and dirt. Just as before, start at the top of the blinds and work your way down to the bottom. Keep wiping until you have fully removed all the dirt and dust. If you have light coloured or white blinds, make sure that you use a white cloth. Dyes from a dark cloth can get on the blinds and ruin their colouring. The colour of the rag makes no difference if you have dark-colour blinds.

5. Let the Blinds Dry

By this time, your blinds will not only be completely clean, but they will also be damp. Leave the blinds all the way down until they dry completely. Once you are sure they are completely dry, raise them to the desired height.
