Using colour schemes in interior decorating

When thinking about re-designing the interior of your home, colour schemes can be a very important factor to consider, and are often pivotal in creating the desired ‘feel’ or atmosphere. Deciding on actual colour schemes is of course always an issue of your own taste rather than any hard and fast rules; however there are some things to keep in mind to avoid a decorating faux pas.

Selecting colours

In most cases, the choosing of the colour scheme will be the base of the rest of the design, and will influence most decisions made afterwards. In terms of how colours change the impression that certain rooms give, blues, greens and similar colours usually create a soothing effect, reds, yellows and oranges tend to make a room feel more vibrant and cheerful whilst beige and tan type colours are a safe option  for pretty much any home.

When using a combination of colours, the colours that work best are the ones that are next to each other on a the colour wheel, one of which you can pick up from most hardware shops or order from your preferred paint manufacturer. The colours that are across from each other on the wheel are typically contrasting, and it’s important to note that there is a wealth of different shades for every colour; red for instance ranges from a pale almost white pinkish colour right through to a deep, almost black hue.

The walls

After making a choice regarding the colour arrangement, the most common place to start with any decoration is the walls. Walls form the backbone of any decorating project as the biggest surfaces, and thus every other choice revolves around them. Again, depending on personal taste, this could mean wallpaper or paint.

Furniture designs

With furniture there are two ways to go; pick neutral colours that will suit any colour scheme you have picked previously, and use throws and cushions to tie-in the different aspects of the room, or match furniture with the walls via a different shade of the same colour, with neutral or similar hued detailing.

Fabrics

Areas of fabric such as the curtains or bed linen in the bedroom can vary in approach in terms of colour. With curtains there is the option to vary on texture and weight as well as colour and pattern, allowing you to vary those aspects if you decide to match up on colour, in order to avoid overloading.

Details

Details like wall pictures, statuettes/busts and ornaments depend largely on personal taste and the resources available. Selecting detail pieces in the colour of the rest of the room will depend on the colour chosen, as some of objects only look good in certain colours i.e. black/white statuettes.

Conclusion

Any decorating is mostly an issue of what makes the person who will be living there comfortable and happy in that environment. These design tips however will ensure that you can have the look you want without creating a style nightmare.
